POSITION: English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher - 0.4 FTE
Job Purpose:
The English as a Second Language (ESL) Teacher provides direct specialized instruction and teacher consultation for the purposes of developing the English language proficiency of students eligible for Multilingual/English Learner services per the State of Michigan. The ESL Teacher works directly with the District Multilingual Learner Coordinator in the provision of programs and services to ensure compliance with federal and state laws.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Plan and implement specially designed programs of instruction for students who are multilingual learners in language arts and content areas that will help to develop communication and other skills necessary for success in the regular classroom setting and in life situations. Program services may be delivered in the classroom setting or in a separate setting and shall be in alignment with the district’s Language Acquisition Plan and the student’s Individual Service Plan (ISP).
- Facilitates the development of Individual Service Plans for all multilingual learner students in collaboration with Building Personnel.
- Plans, organizes, and provides instruction based on core curriculum content standards and English Language Development Standards. Instruction must be consistent and coordinated with the district’s instructional program so that students meet and exceed learning targets and the requirements outlined in the state and federal law.
- Develops and delivers lesson plans utilizing a broad range of appropriate differentiated techniques and strategies addressing all aspects of communication that develop each student’s ability to read, write, speak, and listen in content areas at levels that ensure learners meet or exceed learning targets, and allow multilingual learners to meaningfully access the district’s instructional program.
- Work with District Multilingual Learner Coordinator to identify program needs (e.g. instructional materials and equipment, etc.) and acquire necessary materials and supplies specific to multilingual learner services.
- Works with the District Multilingual Learner Coordinator to administer academic and language assessments as needed for students at proficiency levels 1.0-3.0 for the purpose of evaluating student’s progress in meeting academic learning targets and progress in language acquisition.
- Maintains complete and accurate records of student’s progress and evidence of growth and progress for all students meeting the criteria as a multilingual/English Learner. Communicate progress with families regularly.
- Ensures the provision of a nurturing, supportive, and positive learning environment with high expectations that encourage student responsibility, enhance motivation, clearly communicate classroom routines, and incorporate challenging instructional strategies.
- Works with classroom teachers to implement language acquisition plans, to implement differentiated instruction, and to utilize SIOP strategies and other research based strategies to support multilingual learners in progressing in the general curriculum and gaining proficiency in listening, speaking, writing, and reading the English language.
- Works with the District ML Coordinator to ensure services are in alignment with the Districts Language Acquisition Plan for multilingual learners.
- Participates in professional learning activities as required or assigned.
- Ensures compliance with federal and state laws in the areas of program documentation, oral and written translations, and parent involvement in collaboration with the District Multilingual Learner Coordinator and Building Personnel.
- Facilitates frequent and effective home-school communication including: conferences; written communication; parent trainings and other meetings/events; and administrative support for childcare, interpreting, translations, etc. in collaboration with Building Personnel.
- Prepares and maintains written documentation as noted in the district Multilingual Learner Handbook.
- Understands and complies with the policies, rules, and regulations regarding the Multilingual/English learners. Advocates for programming required to meet the learning needs of Multilingual/English learners.
- Works with the District ML Coordinator to prepare for the administration of the WIDA ACCESS and WIDA Screener for all students meeting the necessary requirements for these assessments. Maintains complete and accurate records of student’s progress and evidence of growth and progress. Administers state required assessments as needed and requested by the District ML Coordinator.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Curriculum and Instruction and/or Building Administrator.
Qualifications:
Education and Professional Certification
- Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in Education required
- Valid Michigan Teaching Certificate
- Endorsement or approval in English as a Second Language K-12 or eligible for permit
Skills, Abilities, and Experience
Required:
- Experience in working with English Learners with language proficiency levels between 1.0 and 5.0.
- Knowledgeable about recent research in pedagogy in the field of English language acquisition and English Learner education.
Preferred:
- Fluent in language other than English
- Experience with multiple content areas and/or grade levels (K-12).
- Knowledgeable about a variety of cultures and able to recognize differences that may affect a student’s ability to acclimate to an English-speaking environment.

Working Conditions:
- Operate as an itinerant staff with work space in multiple buildings and a designated “home base”.
